Sisters Watch
Mahurangi, 2023

To support the Aotearoa Art Fair 2023 off site adventures Jen Alexandra, Judy Millar and Sarah Smuts-Kennedy have invited one other artist to show alongside them in Sarah’s studio, gathering the works of six artists who intentionally lean into the potential of an artistic practice giving form to the non-material aspects of life.

Jen, Judy and Sarah met when they were asked to speak about their practices in relation to Swedish Artist Hilma Af Klint at the opening of the exhibition Hilma af Klint: The Secret Paintings at City Art Gallery Wellington in December 2021. In 2022 they began a weekly conversation via zoom that creates space for them to nurture each other’s practices, which intentionally work with forces beyond self. This is the first time they are bringing form to these conversations.

Sarah will show a work created for the exhibition Energy Work at Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery 2022, and has invited German Artist Katharina Grosse known for her large scale site related installations. Judy Millar will show new work and has invited Jim Dornan a New Zealand self-taught artist whose estate is managed by Robert Heald. Jen Alexandra will show new work being developed for an upcoming solo show in 2023 at the Dowse Art Museum and has invited Natasha Matila-Smith an arts practitioner based in Tāmaki Makaurau.
