Poetics of Space

Jen Bowmast – Poetics of Space, 2017, Arte Laguna Prize, Arsenale, Venice, Italy

Taking it’s cue from Gaston Bachelard’s ‘The Poetics of Space’ the installation responds to the artist’s meetings with clairvoyants and focuses on how space we inhabit, both real and imagined, transforms into place. This transition is engendered solely by the emotional transaction of assigning meaning to space. Investigating how places are created gives rise to questions about the ways in which our relationships to places change when we inhabit them.

The sculptural forms become miniature monuments in a ritualised space. Historically, black salt is used as a tool to disperse, absorb or repel negative energy thus protecting the work.
